The Remembrances Blog Is Open
Posted by: Rich on October 09, 2007
The Remembrances Blog is ready to go and open for membership. We have included a Tutorial to help you become familiar with our blog. Included below is a comment posted on the Getting Started tutorial that I think best describes what this blog is about.

President, Board of Directors
Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Advisory Fund

We hope this is a way for anyone to share his or her memories of the 646 honored on our wall or tell us what the Memorial means to them. Veterans and others might find it interesting to share thoughts about the war and its aftermath. I think of it as a living testimony to those who served and sacrificed. I just finished reading the biographies of the 646 and was struck by the promise of dreams unfulfilled and what fine young men they were. We hope to get all the biographies on the web site for everyone to read. In the meantime, let's talk.”

I've been reading the biographies of the 646 Philadelphians honored at the Memorial, as we work to put them on the web site. I've been struck by the promise their young lives held and can't help but wonder what was lost when they were lost in Vietnam. If you get a chance when they are posted, I think you will find the experience rewarding. We hope that occurs within the next month.

We held our Veterans Day observance on November 11 for a crowd of more than 100 individuals. The ceremony followed one at the Korean War Memorial across the street. It continues to be a source of satisfaction that so many veterans value these Memorials as appropriate places to honor the service of our men and women to this nation, as well as honor the sacrifice of the fallen. It is another good reason why we should continue to support and value what our Memorial and others symbolize.

I think any site soliciting money from vietnam veterans who are disabled or are seeking fellow viet vets to discuss issues concerning our plight is a disgrace to the cause. Seems to me if this was a genuine site caring for vets all your blogs and communication lines would be the first choice, to show sincereity, not soliciting our dav/pen-
sions. Just like most sites extorting the vets, you suck. bet this comment won't get posted>

I'm not sure as to the reasons for your harsh language relating to our web site or our effort to preserve and protect the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The purpose of this blog was not to solicit money from disabled veterans but merely to offer a forum to bring veterans together. The Philadelplhia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Board is composed of Vietnam veterans committed to ensuring that we never forget the sacrifice of the 646 Philadelphians lost in the war. Please feel to contact us directly at 215-576-1216 if you would like to discuss.

I would like to know how I may write a few lines to memorialize the life of Kenneth Hershman. I grew up with him in Northeast Philly. His family is all gone now and it would be sad if there were no one to say a few words about this brave young man who received the Bronze Star for Valor. He was a gunner on a chopper and was Airrborne. Would love to hear from anyone who might have known him.

We are pleased with the outpouring of support from veterans and other volunteers at the Memorial in an effort to deter the vandalism and illegal skateboard activity. They have been patrolling since April 15 and will do so for the near future. If any veterans patrolling would like to comment on their presence at the Memorial, please do so.
